The history of Jávea

Berber pirates came this way, as did the armies of France and Britain. The fortress church of San Bartolomé in the historic heart of the old town is lasting legacy of those far off days. Now the town is a restful haven for international residents and holiday makers where you can discover restaurants, bars and cafes hiding in a maze of narrow streets that will delight the most discerning gourmet. Approach the town by sea and you will find over sixteen miles of beautiful beaches, coves and cliffs all washed by a clear and pleasant Mediterranean sea.

Where is Javea?

Xàbia lies 92 km north of Alicante and 105 km south of Valencia, nestling in a beautiful bay between the twin peaks of Cap de San Antonio and Cap de la Nao. Many major airlines fly into Alicante and Valencia and offer discounted fares throughout the year, making Jávea not only a great summer destination but also an attractive winter resort due to it excellent position. Xàbia is where the sun rises on Spain and where the benefits from a year long temperate climate are very beneficial to health, especially during the winter.

Over the years the growth of the town has been gradual and in most cases sympathetic; but the valley and the slopes of the Montgó and Cap Negre on which Xàbia is built has not changed, nor has the light. Nor, we suspect, has the spirit of Jávea.

THE THREE PARTS OF JAVEA

JAVEA PUEBLO (The Old Town)

The fortified gothic church of San Bartolome is a listed National Monument that dates back to the 15th Century and is situated at the heart of the old town of Jávea amid a labyrinth of narrow lanes and shady squares.

The Mercado De Abastos (Xàbia Indoor Market) is a great place to escape the heat of summer and to mingle with the locals going about their daily shopping, although this tends to be as much about socialising and meeting old friends than buying chorizo and jamon. At either end of the market there are two conveniently located bars where a cold beer or a café con leché provides refreshment and a welcome pause before you continue with your shopping, Spanish style.

In the pueblo, you will find blue skies, palm trees, noble architecture, and fine food, robust wine and warm hospitality.

ADUANAS DEL MAR (The Port and Marina)

Xàbia Port oozes charm and character with numerous cafes serving tapas, beer and coffee, and restaurants where you can indulge in Spanish cuisine at its finest. Then, for a change, you can try Indian, Italian, Chinese and a full range of international cuisine with a least two Michelin starred restaurants.

The low skyline of the Port is dominated by the modern silhouette of the Church of Nestra Senora de Loreto. The sweeping external columns that support this dramatically designed maritime church represent the twelve apostles. Inside, the roof imitates the hull of a ship, a clear symbol of the church of Jesus represented by a fisherman’s boat.

The fishing fleet bring in a daily catch which is auctioned at the harbour and beyond you will find the splendid Club Nautico providing safe and stylish anchorage for yachts and pleasure cruisers.

Holding everything together is the long Esplanade which is a perfect place to stroll and watch and be watched.

The best way to see the town and its environs is to take a boat trip out into the bay, from where you can enjoy a panoramic vista that encompasses the rugged beauty of the coastline, the full majesty of the Montgó Massif and the mountain ranges that fade on the distant horizon. A daily ferry runs from the marina to Denia and returns every couple of hours. Buy tickets from the booth in the Port located at the end of the La Grava beach closest to where the fishing fleet unload their catch.

EL ARENAL: The beach
The Arenal beach has fine golden sand fringed with cafes and a wide range of restaurants serving international cuisine or traditional Spanish tapas and paellas to suit all tastes and budgets. The beach is safe and clean – perfect for young families. In summer artists sculpt incredible forms out of the sand and arts and crafts stalls do a fine trade. Disabled access to the beach and from there to the sea is a common feature of this coastline.

The Parador Nacional Hotel is stylishly modern and set in beautiful landscaped gardens bordered by the Canal De La Fontana leading to an exclusive marina. building that bears its name. However you can still find four of the castle's surviving cannons outside the Church of San Bartolomé in the old town.

OTHER BEACHES AND BAYS

MONTAÑAR UNO – This pebbly beach is situated between the Parador Hotel and the Port and is where you can windsurf and Jet Ski. Summer beach bars called chiringuitos are erected here and you can enjoy a refreshing drink as you take in the beauty of the perfect bay and the deep blue sea.

AMBOLO – You can find this beach on the Porticholl road. Park at the top and take the path down. It’s worth the effort as it is great for sunbathing. It’s a naturalist beach so all you need to take is your sun cream and a towel.

PORTICHOLL (La Barraca) – From this beach you can see the island of Porticholl and dine on wonderful local dishes in a typical Spanish restaurant. Or simply turn up for a drink. On a cold day in winter try a plate of hot toasted walnuts to dip into a bowl of local honey, to accompany your coffee and brandy.

GRANADELLA – This stunning little beach nestles in a natural bay surrounded by pine clad mountains which can be viewed from two very good restaurants specialising in fish and paellas dishes. Yachts moor off the pebbly beach which is full of character at any time of the year and rightfully chosen by viewers of Spanish TV channel, Antena 3, as Spain’s favourite beach.

LANDMARKS - EL MONTGO

El Parque Natural de Montgó, the majestic mountain range of the Montgó, covers an area of 2,150 hectares and boasts more than 600 species of plants, many endemic Iberian varieties, making this an enchanting spot that is much loved by residents and visitors alike. Several walking routes can be followed, varying an difficulty, height and seasons of the year. The peak of the Montgó is 753 meters (2,471 ft) above the sea level and the intrepid climber will be rewarded with spectacular views along the coast of the Gulf of Valencia taking in the Peñon de Ifach at Calpe, inland to the Sierra de Bernia mountain range and on a clear day even across to the island of Ibiza. This is the second highest peak situated close to the sea in the entire Mediterranean.

The Montgó was declared a National Park on 16th March 1987 with an area covering approximately 2,150 hectares. For the people of Xàbia the massif presents a particularly pleasing aspect, that of a giant reclining elephant with a perfectly positioned and shaped cave for its eye – the ever-present gaze that watches over the town. Xàbia is doubly blessed as it is also the sunnier south side with the ´trunk of the elephant´ providing a natural sea barrier that protects the town and port from harsh north winds. The citizens of Denia on the northern slopes of the mountain would probably disagree, but the owners of properties on La Plana, the south facing slopes of the trunk, are sitting on one of the most expensive areas of real estate on the Mediterranean with views that are both breathtaking and captivating, across the sea towards the Balearic Islands and stretching away to the distant Sierra Bernia mountain range.

Along the ridge line of the Montgo is a series of mostly abandoned windmills which date back to the 18th Century. One or two have recently been converted into bijou accommodation.

FIESTAS

Our festivals delight everyone throughout the year, especially the fiesta of San Juan at the end of June and the Moors and Christian festival in July. The first of the year is of course the Three Kings on January 6.

The Day of the Cross is particularly poignant here in Xàbia where Jesus Nazareno maintains a strong hold on the emotions and traditions of the town.

Xàbia/Jávea comes alive with laughter and gaiety during the time of the fiestas which are very frequent throughout the year, so the town wears a year-long smile of welcome for its visitors and residents.
